Caroline Sheriff’s Office Recognizes 375th

Anniversary of the Sheriff in U.S.

Caroline County Sheriff A. A. “Tony” Lippa, Jr. announces that his office has authorized special breast badges commemorating the 375th anniversary of the sheriff in the United States.

The office of the sheriff came into being by act of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1634.  The first 8 sheriffs in the new world were 8 shires (now known as counties) in the Colony of Virginia.

The badges were designed and obtained with non-government funds.  The badges will be purchased by each individual deputy who wishes to participate.  Each badge displays the seal of the Commonwealth as its center, surrounded by “Caroline County” and “1634-2009”.

The badges have been authorized for wear beginning on National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Day, May 15th, through December 31, 2009.

“I wanted our appointees to have a way to show their involvement in this historic occasion. The Virginia General Assembly by resolution this year recognized the formation of the first sheriffs in the new world,” Sheriff Lippa said.  “This is just another way our appointees have shown their commitment to this organization and this great country of ours,” Lippa continued.

The badge, which is pictured below, was designed and supplied by Tony Martin of Premium Marketing & Sales in of Glen Allen, a Virginia owned and operated company.
